Born in 1955 - United Kingdom
Ben Langlands (London, 1955) and Nikki Bell (1959) live and work in London. They trained at the Fine arts school of Middelsex Polytechnic College in London between 1977 and 1980, and they have been working together since 1978.
Since early 80's, Ben Langlands and Nikki Bell have been developing an artistic approach which questions architecture and its foundations, mainly through plan and design. They try to highlight the similarities in the geometric figures which are used for building plans, though for a definite usage, from bank to prison, from Chateau de Chambord to the Grande Arche at La Défénse.
In Langlands & Bell's work, the plan eventually achieves flexibility in its form and sense, and is then transformed into a pattern, ornament, furniture, painting or even a logo for that matter. Their research is based on the relationship between architecture and furniture, between a building and its representation, between a rational drawing of a plan and its transformation into a precious relief.
Several major exhibitions have been dedicated to them, especially at the Imperial War Museum in London in 2003, Whitechapel Art Gallery in the same city in 2006 or even the MOMA in New York in 2006. In 2004, they won the BAFTA awards for Interactive Arts Installation and were nominated for the Turner award the same year.
