Born in 1964 - United Kingdom
Tony Kendon Howorth was born in Crumpsall, Manchester in 1964. He now works from his studio based in the Rossendale valley. He is a self taught artist who declares many influences, more in terms of inspiration than imitation. Artists such as Geoffrey Key, Fred Yates, Peter Stanaway, Simeon Stafford and Liam Spencer are amongst those he most admires.
He began painting after a period of illness, initially working with bitumen, a material which he used when working as a roofer. He went on to develop a glass, mirror-like finish on deep edged canvases.
In a recent series of paintings he has been exploring his fascination with city life. This series of work concentrates on the hustle and bustle of people, shown in contrast with the light and the still shadows created by the city at night. Many of them are painted in monochrome, showing the night time cities to dramatic effect.
'I am intrigued by city life and people going about their days. Having lived in large cities in the UK and abroad, I like to paint the hustle and movement of daily life'.
To date Tony has had several sell out shows in private galleries in the north west and has sold to a number of high profile individuals. His paintings are now in private collections in places as far flung as New Zealand, Spain and Islamabad.
