Presentation

John Carter is an English artist born in 1942 that lives and works in London. He graduated from the Twickenham School of Art and Kingston School of Art and taught at the Chelsea College of Art and Design until 1999.

John Carter realized abstract and minimalist compositions on white monochrome backgrounds, which establish a dialogue between sculpture and painting. His artwork is based on geometry, symmetry and harmony notions as in architecture. The square, parallelogram, vertical and horizontal lines and the triangle are his favourite forms. The particularity of these artworks is to gather some characteristics of painting (flatness, variation of surfaces, colors) combined to those specific to sculpture (playing with volumes).
By moving the forms, John Carter creates an area, a slide, a crack that draws the spectator's eye towards what is going on behind the canvas.

In 2007, John Carter was elected member of the Royal Academy of Arts of London. His artworks are exhibited in many international institutions like the Royal Academy of London, the Art Council of Great Britain, the British Museum, or even the Council for National Academy Awards.
