Kate Walters

United Kingdom

biography under completion

Kate Walters works in wild, inaccessible places that enable her to achieve the clarity she needs for her work. Using techniques as varied as drawing, watercolour, monotype, animation, and writing and working with her eyes closed & using her non-dominant hand she explores the overlapping fields of awareness & psyche encountered between species and phenomena. She often uses a shamanic drum/repeated passages of classical/sacred music, to enable her brain wave patterns to become theta, those which aid the creative/visionary process. Walters works with watercolour on paper; preparing with gesso allows her to work in layers, hiding and revealing until the image comes into focus and fills the paper with its arrival. Her works can take years to complete.

Having trained in ancient, indigenous ways of being in the world underpins her practice. Walters is dedicated to finding a contemporary voice for the feminine or matrixial cooperative perspective. How animals are regarded is key: the skins inhabited, shared bodies of so many sisterly organs and negotiating her way through the caesura that exists between human & animal to inspire greater appreciation of the natural world.
