Alina & Jeff Bliumis

Born in 1972 - United States

Alina & Jeff Bliumis are two artists born in the Soviet Union. They both emigrated to the United States where they currently live and work.

Their work is based on their experience of emigration and the confrontation with a cultural and social environment different from their native country; it evokes the themes of immigration, language and multi-cultural communities.

Their work is colorful and full of fantasy. The couple masters various excentric techniques: after manufacturing casts for books, they put liquid foam in the cavities, in order to recreate a form. Then they draw the covers of the books by combining symbols, icons and signs. Then the objects are heated and transferred on the porous "books" and finished with acrylic paint. The method has particular seduces the Saatchi gallery, which brought the two artists international attention.
