Julian Schnabel is a neo-expressionist painter and American filmmaker born October 26, 1951 in New York.
He studied Fine Arts at the University of Houston where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts, as well as at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York . He exhibited his work for the first time in 1979 at the Mary Boone Gallery on Fifth Avenue and participated at the Venice Biennale in 1980.
In 1996, he began a career as a director in Basquiat, which is a biographical film about the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. His next film, Before Night Falls, is the adaptation of the novel by Reinaldo Arenas. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, made in 2006 is the adaption of the novel The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby.
