Robert Milton Ernest Rauschenberg, born October 22, 1925 in Port Arthur, Texas, and died May 12, 2008 in Captiva, Florida, is an American visual artist .
He began studying pharmacy then during the Second World War, Robert Rauschenberg joined the Kansas City Art Institute then the Académie Julian in Paris. He contributed to numerous post-war movements but always refused to be affiliated with a specific movement in order to maintain his independence even if today he is considered to belong to the Neo-Dada movement and he is the one of the precursors of Pop art .
In the 1950s, he created his series of monochrome compositions White Paintings. At the same period he created his series Black Painting then Red paintings with wood, newspaper and nails. But his series which made him famous is without counting his Combines series. He appropriates abstract expressionism and introduces different elements from the real world to question the difference between art objects and everyday objects. Subsequently, he will develop his work using different mediums such as photography and sculpture. Robert Rauschenberg's works are exhibited in numerous museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. He has also held several exhibitions such as at Remai Modern in Canada in 2023 or at the Paula Cooper Gallery in Florida in 2022.
