Born in 1882 - United States
Born in 1882 in Nyack and died in 1967 in New York, Edward Hopper is an American artist. He marked art in the twentieth century by internationally recognized works.
He quickly settled down in New York where he founded his studio. Edward Hopper is one of the major actors of the American naturalist current. The artist drew inspiration from everyday scenes, in order to create works that capture reality. He was mainly interested by the working class who he portrays in his large formatted paintings. His work is a visual testimony of the physical and social evolution in U.S.A. In his work, one can sense a feeling of nostalgia due to the past with the portrayal of isolated and lonely figures, with a lost or melancholic look. He also highlights the duality between nature and modern society.
Edward Hopper was a multidisciplinary artist. Indeed, his oil paintings are known worldwide, but he is also known for his posters, engravings and watercolor paintings.
