Timothée Chaillou

presentation

Commissioner, art critic, art historian, Timotée Chaillou is part of this new generation that counts in contemporary art. By providing a fresh look on art, Piasa chose to name him director of the contemporary art department. We met with him to ask him a few questions about his passion and inspirations.

{ARTSPER} You were recently appointed director of the contemporary art department for the auction house Piasa. At such a young age, that must be impressive! Why do you think they chose you?
{Timothée Chaillou}: Piasa’s direction wished to develop the department with a curatorial approach. We organize our sales, keeping in mind that the exhibition and hanging process are a real esthetic experience. This new activity is organically linked to everything I have worked on before. It is very interesting and pleasant to collaborate with experts and commissioners.

{A} As well as working for Piasa, you are also an art critic, art historian and cinema critic and a commissioner. Where do you find the time to do all of that?
{TC} When it comes to passion, we always find time!

{A} Where did this desire to become an art critic come from? And commissioner?
{TC} During my studies, directions became clearer, when I was studying art history and cinema. First, I started writing for revues and then for catalogues. It’s only after I saw and experimented the work of other commissioners, and the importance of theater in my life that I chose this road.

{A} Is there any exhibition you are particularly proud of?
{TC} I couldn’t answer you. I loved organizing exhibitions in galleries as much as in artists-run-spaces or in a revue.

{A} Are you inspired by exhibitions to create your own?
{TC} Most certainly, but not only that. The landscaping, opera, ancestral rituals, religious presentations, shop windows, photographs, cinema, musical compositions are some of the themes and imagery that I use as a source of inspiration.

{A} Do you think internet and its recent evolution has an influence on your work in an auction house?
{TC} A direct influence. All of the social networks and applications of sharing images and information help circulate certain information that is important for us to seize immediately. They are useful to discover locations and actors of the art world but also artists with whom I wish to collaborate.

{A} What do you think of Artsper and its project?
{TC} A lot of good! The website’s ergonomy is accessible, easy to use. The variety of medium and prices are attractive and your invitations to selectors allow a good referral in the proliferation of artworks you offer.
