The portrait is one of the oldest themes known to art, the first coming from ancient Egypt.
During several centuries, there was a tendency to idealize features to flatter the patron that was having his or her portrait done. Then, progressively, portraits became more common and artists began to take intereste in other characters, with less money and less requirements, delivering increasingly realist works. The portrait followed the different evolutions of modern painting and in the 20th century, rather than getting closer to reality, painters used the portrait as a means to experiment with new artistic techniques and theories.
Photography and sculpture followed the same path, thus showing the incredible creativity and interpretation of artists.
All the styles from street art to naive art have tried their hand at this exercise and prove to us that they succeeded in renewing the genre of portraits.
