The collage is a technique at the frontier between art and crafts. It was introduced by the French cubist artists at the beginning of the 20th century. Even though they used it in a sporadic way, they raised it to the same level as paintings or sculptures in the hierarchy of art. As soon as it started, all the new artistic movements like the dadaist, surrealist or constructivist tested it and used it regularly.
Yet, the notion of collage is not understood the same way by the artists depending on their artistic approach. In fact, on one hand, it is seen as a juxtaposition of pictures from the real world and in that way it is the closest representation of the truth; on the other hand, the collage is made of cut and reinterpreted pictures which leads to the creation of an imaginary world.
This technique is now considered as the most relevant process when an artist wishes to contextualize his/her works and to add an engaged message.
Today, contemporary artists are presented as the masters of collage. Have a look yourself!
