Marcus Rothkowitz, more commonly known as Mark Rothko, is a Russian artist, born in 1903, and pioneer of American Abstract Expressionnism with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.
However, he is above all known for having experimented with a new meditative way of painting : « Painting in a field of colors ». In fact, Rothko sees in his painting live beings whose color would be humain and format transcendant.
Therefore, Rothko works with large colored structures, surround by rectangular shapes lightly faded out whose undetermined pictorial internal pictorial field is supposed to free all recollection and erase memory. These large-scaled pieces, for the most bi-chromatic, aspire to a peaceful nobility and aim to trigger a meditative experience.
Here is a selection of contemporary artists whose work, as abstract as expressive, was inspired by the genius of Rothko.
