"I am the spark with which others will catch fire. Me, I have already caught fire. »
Davide Cicolani was born in San Felice Circeo, 98 km from Rome, famous for being the place where the witch Circeo had her cave. Raw, outsider, singular, out of the ordinary, Davide Cicolani is all this at once, but above all a rebellious, free spirit.

He has always been creating, without truce and without ever having attended a school of drawing. His art is for him a form of liberation, of escape but at the same time the only practicable way, a new prison.
All his life, the artist has done nothing but create links, between those who, like him, felt inside themselves the need to express themselves through their art. For him, it is more important to give visibility to others than to himself. "I am the spark with which others will catch fire. I have already caught fire. "Souls call each other and meet each other. Very strong bonds are woven between spirits in love with the authentic.
"It is not by chance that my exhibition in Marseille was called "My Friends". »

Indeed, according to the artist, the theme of friendship has not been explored in the field of contemporary art, at least not in an obvious way. In general, artistic expression is experienced by artists in an individualistic way. The artist, conscious or unconscious, settles into his work, with his ego. Conversely, Davide investigates himself through his relationship with others. His characters are as many individuals with whom he dialogues at the moment of creation. Friendship is, according to the artist, a relationship that is established without any constraint, through invisible threads. The birth and development of a bond must be natural. It can last one minute, one day, one life.

The values expressed in his work are positive values and the diversity of his creations brings an atmosphere of joy, vivacity, effervescence. Sometimes his characters have an innocent, almost infantile character, sometimes they are austere, serious, but always ambiguous. They have strength, character. They retain all the kindness of the artist, but at the same time they are powerful, resolute, determined. The dense line, the vivacious color, gives them a great expressive strength.

The choice of the support is not the fruit of chance. Davide Cicolani prefers city maps, subway maps, and other folding surfaces. Indeed, folding plays an important role because it creates light reflections. Thus, the light is reflected differently depending on where the drawing is exposed. Sometimes visibility is not easy and requires moving around. The canvas its own life, in perpetual change. Despite its immobility, it is always in motion.

The artist is also interested in the history of art and carries out various experiments such as his series of stained glass windows, in search of an individual dialogue between form and color.

Sometimes he adds inscriptions, either in his mother tongue, Italian or French (he lived in France for 10 years) or in his own language, his own, whose meaning only the artist knows. These are secret signatures whose keys are accessible only to the spirits connected to him by the bonds of creation and friendship.

Davide Cicolani also uses Japanese calligraphy, which he studied for a long time. Each new work, begins with a Japanese character, which lays the basis of the drawing. Then comes all naturally the breathing essential to creation, this time of meditation, during which mind and body meet.
The art of Davide Cicolani, evokes love and joy. It is an ode to the beauty of the world, an invitation to perceive the invisible connections between people.

Davide Cicolani

Italy  • 1978

Davide Cicolani was born in Rome in 1978. He lived a difficult childhood. Indeed he was struck by lightning at the age of 6, and the year after he was diagnosed with nephritis.

Then, he spent much time at the hospital and that is where he began drawing. At 17 he began working by night in a factory, to be able to draw during the day. But he was fired in 2006, which made him leave Italia and move to Paris. He now travels between Rome and Paris.

His favorite mediums are maps : Paris metro, Italian roads, world map… Davide Cicolani often uses paint and varnish to give an impression of stained-glass windows. The power emanating from this outsider artist’s works is striking.
