Although apparently distant, photography and religion are in fact intimately linked, as Marie-Josée Mondzain demonstrates in her book Image, icône, économie. Indeed, both have a common vocabulary ("revelation", "light") but not only ! Religion and art go hand in hand, one using the other ; religion needs representation to be understood by all, thus providing many subjects to art.
Whether in a documentary register as in Munem Wasif's works of art, pictorial-inspired at Bertrand Noël's, with a critical focus in Jean-Paul Veison Marcelli's, or through other approaches, we offer you a selection of photographs related to religion.
How can photography be used to capture the essence of religious beliefs and practices?
What ethical considerations should be taken into account when photographing religious ceremonies and rituals?
How has the use of photography in religious contexts evolved over time, and what impact has this had on the representation of different faiths?
