Franciszek Starowieyski was born in 1930 and died in 2009, is a Polish artist. He studied at the School of Fine Arts of Krakow and then in Warsaw.

A painter, draftsman, scenographer and illustrator, he is a protean artist. At the beginning of his career, his work was part of socialist realism, and then entered the Polish school of "cyrk poster" and based his approach in the Polish poster tradition, which he elevated to the rank of art.

Franciszek Starowieyski's work is internationally renowned. His work was rewarded with the Grand Prize at the Biennial of Contemporary Art of Sao Paulo in 1973, and was also rewarded at the International Poster Biennale in Warsaw and at the International Film Festival in Chicago in 1979 and 1982. He is the first Polish artist to have been the subject of a retrospective at the MoMA in 1986.
