Presentation

Nava Lee-Tal was born in Israel, and currently lives and works in Tel Aviv.

Having grown up with parents who survived the Holocaust, Nava’s paintings seek an antidote to the dark memories that were present throughout her youth. She portrays playful and humorous situations with carefully chosen - and sometimes unexpected - color palettes.

Nava has been a weaver for over two decades. She has mastered the art of teaching weaving, knitting and sewing. In her art, Nava breathes new life into shapes, textures and patterns that permeate through her experience working with textiles.

Statement

My work is an effort to capture scenes and objects that I experience in most immediate and intimate surroundings - apartments.

The COVID-19 pandemic redirected our attention to the private everyday items that give life to our indoor environment. By painting the typically banal items that make up our interiors, I draw attention to the complex nature of these objects as items that all at once invoke joy, memory, anxiety, and curiosity. By adding a layer of expression to the objects that inhabit our homes, I am able to carry my paintings into the world of surrealism and abstraction.

I work primarily with oil and acrylic paints, and choose my color palettes deliberately for expressive purposes.
