Presentation

Education: Rietveld Academy Amsterdam & Royal Academy The Hague.

Coen Meulendijks was primarily a sculptor. He left the Royal Academy in The Hague prematurely because his preference for an organic, expressive visual language did not match the prevailing ideas of the institution. As a painter / graphic artist he is self-taught. Meulendijks immediately painted on canvas without a preliminary study. While painting, he went on until he thought he had achieved the right composition and expression. In his works, ordinary, everyday things are reformed and arranged into a magical, surreal, sometimes haunting world.

The starting point for his entire oeuvre is always man and the hypocrisy of existence. He was inspired by his father's pre-Colombian and African art collection and work by artists such as Grünewald, Beckmann, El Greco, Ensor and especially Lucebert, whose daughter he married. Coen died of cancer in 2005.
