Presentation

Jonathan Huxley was born in 1965. He lives and works in London. Huxley was born in Surrey in 1965. He trained at Berkshire College of Art between 1985 and 1986 and was awarded a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Nottingham Trent Polytechnic in 1989. He studied for a Diploma in Fine Art at the Royal Academy of Art between 1989 and 1992.

In 1992 Huxley was awarded the RA Young Masters Prize and was the subject of the Channel 4 documentary Behind the Eye. Huxley won the award for the most popular painting at the Royal College of Art show in 1997.

Huxley's paintings feature the human figure in constant motion. The speed at which they move accounts for their shadowy nature, and because of this, and his bold use of colour, Huxley's paintings emit a wonderful energy. Such objects as umbrellas, hats, bathtubs, chairs and ladders, which float alone amongst the works, often accompany his figures. They are often depicted with outstretched arms or in embraces, there is a feeling of excitement or exaltation about them.

The movement of Huxley's figures might lead the viewer to believe that they are ice-skating or playing football, but Huxley does not intend such specific interpretation, instead simply glorying in colour and form in themselves.
