Abstrakte Entdeckungen
Die abstrakte Kunst, wie wir sie heute kennen, hat ihre Wurzeln im 19. Jahrhundert, als die Künstler begannen, der Phantasie und dem Unbewussten Vorrang vor der rein gegenständlichen Kunst einzuräumen. In dieser Zeit ging es in der Kunst weniger um die Idealisierung der Motive als vielmehr um deren emotionale und sensorische Qualitäten. Die Künstler des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts gingen in der Abstraktion noch einen Schritt weiter: Statt die greifbare Realität auf abstrakte Weise darzustellen, begannen sie, Werke zu schaffen, die sich völlig von der sichtbaren Welt lösten. Die erste bekannte "echte" abstrakte Künstlerin ist die schwedische Malerin Hilma af Klint, die eine Reihe von monumentalen, im Spiritualismus verwurzelten Werken schuf. Weitere einflussreiche abstrakte Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts sind Piet Mondrian, Wassily Kandinsky und Mark Rothko.
Heute führen zeitgenössische Künstler aller Art das Erbe dieser Schöpfer fort, indem sie Farbe, Linie und Form für ihre abstrakten Werke verwenden.
