Gestische Abstraktion

Der Begriff "Gestische Abstraktion" bezieht sich auf eine Art und Weise, Kunst zu machen - nicht unbedingt auf das, was gemalt wird, sondern wie es gemalt wird. Künstler verzichten darauf, die Farbe kontrolliert und überlegt auf eine Oberfläche aufzutragen, sondern sie wird intuitiv aufgetragen, indem sie auf die Oberfläche tropft, spritzt, gegossen wird, geschmiert oder geschleudert wird. Was für die gestischen Abstraktionsmaler zählt, ist also nicht die Farbe an sich, sondern die Körperlichkeit, die Ehrlichkeit, die Intuition und der tiefe persönliche Ausdruck. Das wiederum führt dazu, dass sich der Künstler nicht mehr auf das Sujet konzentriert, sondern sich nach innen wendet, um sich inspirieren zu lassen. So wird der Akt des Malens selbst zum Sujet. Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner und Franz Kline führten diese Bewegung ab den 1940er Jahren an, wobei Jackson Pollock mit seinen durchlöcherten Farbdosen, die über die Oberfläche von Number 1A, 1948 (1948), tropften, zweifellos am bekanntesten ist. Gestisch Abstrakte Maler erforschen die tiefsten Emotionen und bringen diesen Teil von sich selbst durch den physischen Akt des Malens zum Ausdruck. Pollock merkte später an, dass er keine Scheu davor habe, Änderungen an einem Gemälde vorzunehmen, denn, so sagte er, das Werk habe sein Eigenleben. Das Gemälde selbst ist ein Relikt der Aktion, es ist eine Aufzeichnung der ausgeführten Gesten. Künstler wie Caroline Vis und Sébastien Desnos (s3b desnos) beziehen sich in ihren Werken bis heute auf Pollock, indem sie entweder den Ausdruck von Emotionen oder, wie Desnos es ausdrückt, "Action Painting" nachempfinden.
