Presentation
Alexandre Lewkowicz, born in 1941 in Russia, is one of the masters of street photography of the 21st century. He studied photography in Poland at the film school in Lodz.
He moved to Paris at the age of 20, learned more about photography while working for Life Magazine and decided to travel to see the world’s streets. Motivated by his love of jazz, he visited Harlem, then La Courneuve, filled with gypsies, and then Stockholm to photograph the decadent youth there. He gave a voice to sections of the population left to their own devices, outside the system.
In 1967, his return to the US was marked by the exhibition entitled « Trends of the young French photographe » at the Bibliothèque Nationale, where he unveiled artwork alongside some of the greatest photographers. He didn’t spend long in the United States and left to focus on more street photography over the next few years.
His photos will be exhibited at the exhibition by Saint-Denis’ Departmental Council, alongside work by Vivian Maier, Elliott Erwitt, Robert Doisneau and Henri Cartier Bresson.
