Le mouvement Arts and Crafts
Le mouvement Arts and Crafts est un mouvement artistique international qui a vu le jour en Grande-Bretagne avant de se répandre dans le reste de l'Europe et en Amérique. L'apogée du mouvement a duré de 1880 à 1920 environ, mais il exerce toujours une grande influence sur le monde de l'art et du design aujourd'hui.
Le mouvement Arts and Crafts est né d'une réaction contre le système contemporain de production de masse de l'ère industrielle. Les membres du mouvement rejetaient non seulement les effets néfastes de la production dominée par les machines, mais aussi le statut inférieur que l'industrialisation avait conféré aux arts décoratifs. Le mouvement Arts and Crafts visait à briser cette hiérarchie entre les beaux-arts et les arts appliqués en réformant les méthodes de production en faveur des ateliers à petite échelle et du travail manuel. Que ce soit pour les bijoux, les meubles ou les bâtiments, les artistes et les designers du mouvement ont mis l'accent sur la beauté de l'objet fonctionnel, la qualité des matériaux et la préservation de l'élément humain dans la conception. Ils se sont tournés vers le passé pour trouver des méthodes de production plus simples et plus efficaces, notamment vers la période médiévale.
William Morris a joué un rôle important dans la création et le développement du mouvement Arts and Crafts, inspirant de nombreux artistes décorateurs de l'époque par ses dessins et ses valeurs. Il croyait en la libération de la classe ouvrière des méthodes monotones et répétitives de production en usine qui prospérait pendant l'ère victorienne. Morris et les autres membres du mouvement Arts and Crafts ont joué un rôle important dans l'élévation du statut des arts décoratifs, et cette influence est toujours présente aujourd'hui.
