Mikulas Medek's distinctive, synthetic work comes from his last creative period. The author finished it shortly before his death, so it can be considered one of his very last paintings. To this day, this canvas has been in the possession of its first owner, who acquired it directly from the artist. The work is visually extremely appealing. It brings together two of the main themes of the artist's work from the mid-1960s, including the red ball and the technical motif, this time of pliers, which also appeared in Emily Medková's photographs. Here, the mechanical world merges with the metaphysical. This corresponds to the colour of the sharp clash of hot red and cool blue. In addition to these two main motifs, however, the surface of the picture is dotted with many micro-motifs, with which Medek often filled the surfaces of her paintings, which interpenetrated each other and brought inner movement into the closed composition. The "pincers" can resemble a jaw, filled with other internal themes. Medek created a multi-sensory whole in which the plasticity of the illusory sphere clashes with the contour drawing. Although he was already seriously ill at the time, this is not at all apparent in the painting itself: it is executed in full painterly vigour, in which the grotesque mixes with the cruel. The head-cage seems to want to engulf the world, but it is inside it.
An expert opinion on the work was issued by the eminent Czech art historian Karel Srp. The work will be included in the forthcoming inventory of the author's works.

Presentation
Mikulás Medek was a Czech painter. He united the artistic tradition of over three generations and thanks to the originality of his expression, depth and spirituality of his extraordinary work, he occupies one of the most prominent places in the Czech art history of the post-war period.Medek's entire work must be perceived in the context of the times, as it directly reflects the oppressive atmosphere of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. He worked freely only for a short period between 1963 and 1969 and had only two exhibitions in Prague during his lifetime. He was the grandson of the impressionist Antonín Slavíček, the son of the general and writer Rudolf Medek and the brother of Ivan Medek. Medek's studio was one of the meeting centres for artists and art historians during the communist rule in Czechoslovakia.
