Presentation

Stéphane photographs daily, from dawn to nightfall, but chooses very few images from his entire production. He developed his negatives and then produced his silver prints by hand, isolating himself in different dark rooms across Europe, which added to his artistic vision a personal touch and a particular control over lights and magnification.

In parallel to his photographic work, Stéphane produced videos and an essay film (experimental documentary) in Greece, the shooting of which spanned many years. He is the curator and organizer of the Temps Zero shows (photo - video projections and improvised concerts) and was one of the initiators of the free rock group Oiseaux-Tempête. "

"Without beginning or end, Stéphane Charpentier indulges in this obsessive gesture of photographing. And wherever he is, what he does. Because the main thing is to tear things away from their veil of uncertainty. . As if the sum of appearances gives reality only a fragmented and always undefined vision. Always vibrant, alive. These images do not reveal another world, it is indeed ours, but the photographer, with a moving sincerity , try to pick up on its wounds and heartbreaks An exacerbated attempt to make reality and its double coexist on a photographic level, as if wanting to bring day into night.

With a mixture of energy, tenacity, and a melancholy that he has managed to transform into pure receptive nervousness, Stéphane Charpentier captures the figures of a world on the verge of cracking. And in the flesh of the images, these motifs merge into each other and nourish an open series, always alive, vibrant.

And what's up today between the sun and the shade? There is "the problem of the Greek type", as Jean-Luc Godard said, and these recent trips by the photographer to Athens from where he brings back bags of film consumed on the spot, and many hours of video images filmed in the area. reality that is not right "

Amaury Da Cunha

"To seize a dawn. To seize a twilight. The man who walks. The man who capsizes. Stéphane Charpentier is engaged in an endless photographic research in silver. Faced with the shadow which wins, the cord of humanity which stretches out, it summons perceptions in order to express a look at our trajectory. Leave a trace of the fight to stay upright, not to be extinguished. To reveal, to give meaning to an enlightened tomorrow "
