The Innamorati series, burlesque-style drawings that Cocteau executed in 1961, are playlets inspired by the Commedia dell'arte, featuring a fisherman and a young woman from the Riviera. The poet wanted them to be kept in Menton, in his testament-museum.
In a letter to Jean Marais in 1938, Jean Cocteau wrote: "the stupidity of lovers is immense, vegetable, animal, astral".
"In the Innamorati series, composed of the confronted faces of men and women pulling towards each other a language that is both lustful and aggressive, the feminine motif openly conquers its sensual meaning. It should be noted, however, that the strictly erotic dimension of these love parades is almost non-existent, these brown-skinned men and light-skinned women, set loose on each other like griffins on a coat of arms, give the image of an archaic, Mediterranean devouring of their attraction, where violence prevails over pleasure" (Jean Cocteau, l'œil architecte, Francis Ramirez and Christian Rolot, acr édition, p.146).
The technique
Jean Cocteau wrote to Jean Marais on 26 January 1961, about the Innamorati that he was drawing: "I make large colour drawings that exhaust me because I crush wax crayons on black paper. Afterwards, I throw myself into cold water". (Jean Cocteau, Lettes à Jean Marais, Albin Michel, p. 477). Confirming the supremacy of line over colour, and his desire to remain "a poet who draws", he wrote in his diary: "Colours obey the organisation of lines as in painters lines obey the organisation of colours".
"The brilliance of the pure colours in Cocteau's paintings would justify evoking Fauvism, Expressionism or even Pop Art if the poet-painter had not sought above all to rediscover the primitivism and barbarism of the colours of children's paintings. Cocteau rediscovered a chromatic intensity similar to that of his paintings in 1961, in the series of Innamorati, drawings with coloured wax chalks (exactly "Neocolor 7000" by Caran d'Ache), completely opacifying the paper. Jean Cocteau (5 July 1889, Maisons-Laffitte – 11 October 1963, Milly-la-Forêt) was a French writer, playwright, artist, sculptor, draftsman, and filmmaker. He became a member of the Académie française in 1955.
Jean Cocteau was one of the artists who marked the 20th century. He was friends with numerous avant-garde artists and an inspiration to them. A trendsetter, he inspired the artists of his generation creating portraits with a genius touch, always original and showing rare intuition and talent. From his early works to the issues in his later works, a certain "difficulty of being" is at the heart of his creation.
A multi-talented artist, Jean Cocteau first of all considered himself a poet and considered that every artwork is like poetry.

Can I negotiate the price of an artwork?
For some artworks, you can negotiate the price. If the price of the work is negotiable, you have a “Make an offer” button under the “Buy this work” one.
To submit your offer, you must make a payment of the desired amount. Your offer will then be forwarded to the gallery, which reserves the right to accept or reject it. If your offer is accepted, it means that your order is confirmed by the gallery and they will prepare the artwork for shipment. If your offer is rejected, you will be refunded the total amount paid automatically. The gallery can also propose a counter-offer for the acquisition of the artwork.

Where can I have my order delivered?
Artsper delivers worldwide!
However, please note that once your order reaches its destination, it may be subject to VAT or other customs fees. These charges are beyond our control and you will be responsible for paying them (this is indicated at the ‘checkout’ first step).

Return and cancellation
You can return the artwork without needing to provide a reason or pay a penalty fee up to 14 days after receiving your order.
