Shitamachi

These images focus on the little things in the urban landscape: noren curtains, public telephone, vending machine, crushed can... Nothing spectacular, but each detail encapsulates the constant flux between use and oblivion.

The light – sometimes bright, sometimes low – cuts through the shapes and brings out a recurring colour combination (industrial green/yellow-ochre): it is this that connects the photos more than the temporal context. The tight framing, often at object height, abolishes hierarchy; it establishes a neutral distance, almost like scientific observation, leaving the viewer room to project their own memories of the street.
