Avec l'invention de l'appareil photo dans les années 1800, il est devenu possible de capturer des images du monde sans avoir recours à la peinture. Depuis lors, les artistes ont expérimenté la photographie et exploré les limites de ce médium. Aujourd'hui, de nombreux artistes utilisent la photographie pour capturer des moments de leur expérience et du monde qui les entoure, qu'ils soient spontanés ou mis en scène.
