Biography

Laure Prouvost is a French contemporary artist born in 1978 in Croix, near Lille. Trained at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and Goldsmiths, University of London, she initially specialized in experimental film before expanding her practice to immersive installations combining video, sculpture , tapestry, performance, and language. Her work explores themes such as identity, memory, feminism, globalization, and ecology, often through fictional and poetic narratives.

In 2013, she won the Turner Prize for her installation Wantee, a work inspired by the world of Kurt Schwitters, featuring a fictional tea room and a film evoking an imaginary conceptual artist grandfather. Two years earlier, she had received the Max Mara Art Prize for Women. In 2019, she represented France at the 58th Venice Biennale with Deep See Blue Surrounding You / Vois Ce Bleu Profond Te Fondre, an immersive multimedia installation that invites visitors on a sensory and dreamlike journey through an imaginary Europe.

Her notable exhibitions include AM-BIG-YOU-US LEGSICON at M HKA Antwerp in 2019, Ring Sing and Drink for Trespassing at Palais de Tokyo in 2018, and For Forgetting at the New Museum in New York in 2014. She has also participated in international events such as Frieze London and Art Basel. In 2024, she was selected to create a permanent work for the future Terminal 6 at JFK Airport in New York.

Based in Brussels, Laure Prouvost is represented by Galerie Nathalie Obadia. Her work, characterized by a sensual aesthetic and offbeat narrative, continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary art.
