Biography
Soichiro Shimizu was born in 1966 in Tokyo in Japan; today he lives and works in Bangkok.
Painter and sculptor established in Bangkok for 13 years and who has acquired a strong reputation in New York in the 90's, Soichiro Shimizu has been exhibited and collected in numerous countries.
While he was supposed to pursue a sport career, his meeting with Keith Haring in Tokyo in the 80's and their strong friendship, will convince him to leave Japan for New York and dedicate his life to art. He will study at the School of Visual Arts and forged his painting style, taking it, for Jeffrey Deitch the former director of Moma Los Angeles, from Marcel Duchamp and Jac.
Soichiro Shimizu's work is the unique fusion between action and meditation, nature and artifice, tenacity and delicacy. The artist is inspired by Japanese, American and European sensitiveness, and creates an original vision that embraces the artistic national traditions, but also overcomes them. The colors are close to rock formations, and other natural events, but also feel like artificial, like a chemical product done in a laboratory.
His creations are like the artworks of European artists as Jean Dubuffet, American artists as Jackson Pollock, with a complex referral network to the history of art and the Japanese craftsmanship.
