Biography
Edmund Sumner is a British architectural photographer based in London, internationally recognized for his sensitive and narrative approach to contemporary architecture. Since 1998, he has collaborated with renowned architects such as Tadao Ando, Foster + Partners, Fernanda Canales, and Gianni Botsford, as well as with major cultural institutions and specialized publishers.
His work is distinguished by its ability to capture the emotional essence of spaces, going beyond simple visual documentation. He explores the memory of places, the traces left by time, and the interaction between people and the built environment. This artistic approach was highlighted in his solo exhibition “Traces” at Albumen Gallery in London in December 2023, where he showcased iconic images such as “The Leaning Man” and interior views of the Inagawa Cemetery designed by David Chipperfield.
Sumner has also served as the official photographer for several international events, including the Sharjah Architecture Triennial and the “Arab Design Now” exhibition in Doha. He has published major photographic books, including Contemporary House India (Thames & Hudson, 2021), documenting contemporary residential architecture in India, and Casa Mexicana, a decade-long exploration of architecture in Mexico.
His portfolio spans diverse projects worldwide, from Mexican brutalist architecture to cultural installations in India, including collaborations with architects like Ludwig Godefroy and Fernanda Canales. His photographs have been exhibited in prestigious institutions, including the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where his interior portrait of Manuel Cervantes' studio was selected for the 2024 Summer Exhibition.
Alongside commissioned work, Sumner develops a rich personal practice, exploring the cultural, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of architecture. He is also represented in the United States by Martha North for advertising and commercial projects.
With his unique perspective and ability to reveal the poetry of architectural structures, Edmund Sumner stands out as a key figure in contemporary architectural photography.
