Die Brücke

Die Brücke (The Bridge) was a group of German expressionist artists formed in Dresden in the early 20th century. Its members included artists such as Erich Heckel, Fritz Bleyl,Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The group changed the course of art history forever by contributing greatly to the creation of Expressionism, a modernist art movement that sought to present the world subjectively to evoke moods or ideas.

Sometimes compared to the contemporary French art group the Fauves, Die Brücke was interested in primitivism and the expression of emotion using vibrant and non-naturalistic colors. Its members were averse to total abstraction, instead preferring figuration and a crude drawing technique. The members of the group rejected the society that they had been brought into, including its values, doctrines, and the art that it produced. They rejected Impressionism, the art movement that was picking up speed in Europe at the time, regarding it as a bourgeois movement powered by classicism, Christian morality and wealth. With Artsper, find the artists who were either behind or inspired by this revolutionary movement, such as Erich Heckel and Bernard Buffet!
