Young British Artists (YBAs)
Die Young British Artists (YBAs), auch bekannt als Brit artists oder Britart, sind eine Gruppe von britischen bildenden Künstlern. Die erste Gruppenausstellung, die heute mit der Bewegung in Verbindung gebracht wird, fand 1988 in London statt. Die meisten der ausgestellten Künstler waren Absolventen des BA Fine Arts-Kurses der Goldsmiths University. Unter der Leitung von Damien Hirst zog die erste Ausstellung die Aufmerksamkeit der Öffentlichkeit auf sich. Sie trug den Titel Freeze und fand in einer leerstehenden Feuerwache in den Londoner Docklands statt. Die Ausstellung war gewagt, provokant und von den Künstlern geleitet und setzte den Standard für die folgenden Ausstellungen und die Art und Weise, wie die Gruppe in der Kunstwelt anerkannt werden würde. Bereits bei dieser ersten Veranstaltung wurde der Kunstsammler Charles Saatchi auf die Gruppe aufmerksam, der später die Werke vieler Künstler der Gruppe unterstützte und sammelte.
Obwohl die Gruppe der mit den YBAs assoziierten Künstler nicht festgelegt ist und sich seit der Gründung der Bewegung ständig verändert hat, gehören zu den Aushängeschildern der Bewegung unter anderem Damien Hirst und Tracey Emin. Zu den bekanntesten Werken, die von der Gruppe produziert wurden, gehören Hirsts The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living, bei dem es sich um einen Hai handelt, der in einem Glasbehälter in Formaldehyd konserviert wurde, und Emins My Bed, ein unordentliches, nicht gemachtes Doppelbett, das von Unordnung umgeben ist.
