Biography
Gilles Caffier is a French artist, designer, and decorator, born in Calais in 1963. After studying textiles and fashion, he became artistic director of the Tokyo International Fashion School. He now lives in Bangkok. His work expresses—through its forms, materials, and techniques—an art that is at once brutalist yet humanist, extravagant yet authentic. He often interprets the contradictory forces of a powerful yet controlled nature, as evoked by his explorations of the textured surface of his ceramics: elephant skin, pangolin scales, crocodile leather, tortoise shell… Combining creativity, a high level of craftsmanship, and technological expertise, his pieces, designed for luxury interiors, are signed and produced in limited editions, using noble materials such as leather, marble, rock crystal, and shagreen. They decorate renowned sites such as Alain Ducasse's Spoon restaurant, the Parrot Cay Hotel, the Metropolitan Hotel in London, the Prince Hotel in Melbourne and the Cheval Blanc in Courchevel, as well as the new Mandarin Oriental in Paris.
