Iconos
Un icono, "eikon" en griego, significa imagen. Inicialmente, el icono califica las imágenes de los mártires y santos de la religión ortodoxa en el Imperio bizantino. La definición se va transformando y se convierte en icónico cualquier objeto, persona o marca identificable en un instante por la mayoría de la población. Se suele atribuir al icono grandes cualidades que van desde el talento artístico hasta el compromiso político, pasando por el sentido del sacrificio y la moralidad o un físico muy ventajoso. Hay algo que hace que una persona pase del anonimato al estatus de leyenda viva o incluso muerta, porque el icono pasa a la posteridad y seguirá siendo una referencia para las generaciones venideras. Todas las generaciones tienen sus iconos, reflejan la sociedad, sus consideraciones, lo que veneran en el momento y a lo que aspiran. Los iconos modernos son, pues, Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Elvis, Michael Jackson, Beyoncé, Nelson Mandela, Gandhi... A veces el icono asume un destino trágico como una muerte repentina o una juventud difícil. Todos hemos oído hablar del club de los 27 (músicos que murieron prematuramente a los 27 años): Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, Jimi Hendrix...Por definición, los artistas (pintores, escultores, escritores, fotógrafos...) tratan de representar fielmente el mundo que les rodea y en el que se desenvuelven. Así, los grandes maestros crearon bustos de emperadores, retratos de monarcas o intelectuales... Desde el siglo XX, y sobre todo bajo el impulso del arte pop en los años 60, el culto a los iconos se ha llevado a un nivel completamente nuevo. Pop art viene de "popular art" en inglés, y caracteriza una nueva forma de arte que refleja la sociedad globalizada y la cultura de masas. El cine de Hollywood, entonces en plena expansión, inspira así inevitablemente a los artistas. En este sentido, Andy Warhol sigue siendo un precursor. Adoptando nuevas tecnologías, entre ellas la serigrafía, que permite reproducir imágenes en color de forma rápida e infinita, ofrece una nueva perspectiva al mundo del arte y permite que lo "vulgar" entre en los museos. Warhol fue un publicista precoz, pero conocía el mercado y frecuentaba a la alta sociedad y a las personalidades. Entre sus obras más famosas están el retrato de Marilyn Monroe, Los Ocho Elvis, Elizabeth Taylor... Pero también productos de consumo más o menos masivo: Las latas de sopa Campbell, el frasco de perfume Número 5 de Chanel, el Macintosh de Apple. El genio del arte pop también produce algunas de las portadas más míticas de la música, como la de los Rolling Stones. Además, la fama de los artistas es cada vez mayor y, cada vez más, ellos mismos pueden adquirir un estatus icónico. Es el caso de Andy Warhol y su emblemática peluca plateada, pero también de Basquiat, Picasso o Frida Kahlo...Además del arte pop, los artistas utilizan muchas técnicas y son muy creativos a la hora de rendir homenaje a sus iconos (pintura al óleo, collage, técnica mixta, dibujo...).
