Sculpture Abstraite
La sculpture abstraite est un pur produit du 20ème siècle. C'est Auguste Rodin qui va marquer le début de la sculpture moderne et qui marquera l'arrêt de l'inspiration antique séculaire qui dominait la création en sculpture. Si les sculptures de Rodin respectent tout de même les règles antiques, elles vont donner l'impulsion à de nombreux sculpteurs du 20ème siècle pour déroger aux conventions traditionnelles. Les sculptures de Rodin vont par exemple inspirer Brancusi et ses lignes simples et pures, qui vont à leur tour préparer le terrain pour la sculpture abstraite.
Le début du 20ème siècle s'accompagne de nombreuses découvertes et notamment des avancées mathématiques qui fascinent les intellectuels. Au même moment, de nombreux artistes européens exilés trouvent refuge à Paris et s'inscrivent chacun dans différents mouvements, tous dans la recherche d'un monde meilleur. Car ce sont aussi les guerres qui incitent les artistes à se détacher de la réalité. De ce désir naît alors un langage tout nouveau, celui de l'abstraction ! Les artistes n'expriment plus une réalité à travers la figuration, mais à travers l'immatériel, la forme, la couleur… Le cubisme va justement initier cet emploi de la forme géométrique dans l'art moderne en abordant les objets de la réalité comme des formes que l'on peut représenter sous différentes facettes pour obtenir une perspective complète. Merci Pablo Picasso ! La sculpture n'est plus vouée à représenter la réalité telle que nous la voyons, mais la sculpture devient l'objet à part entière, elle en extrait l'essentiel. Les cubistes vont aussi adopter une plus grande liberté quant au choix des matériaux moins nobles qu'avant, peut-être par nécessité… Les mouvements qui suivent, comme le Dadaïsme, le néo-dadaïsme, le surréalisme, l'expressionnisme abstrait, le minimalisme vont tous enrichir l'art abstrait. Le futurisme italien se concentre sur la représentation du mouvement et annonce l'apparition de l'art cinétique où le mouvement est l'œuvre d'art.
Un artiste en particulier va profondément marquer la sculpture abstraite : il s'agit d'Alexander Calder. Ses mobiles sont constitués de fines pièces de métal lissées et reliées par du fil de fer. Sa palette de couleurs est inspirée par Piet Mondrian, et l'artiste avait d'ailleurs déclaré : « Je voulais faire des Mondrian qui bougent ». Jean Tinguely ou encore Nicolas Schöffer vont également s'illustrer dans l'art cinétique et la robotique. Puis Marcel Duchamp, dont les recherches tournent également autour du mouvement va introduire dans l'histoire de l'art ses premiers « ready-made » et induire l'idée qu'une oeuvre d'art peut être un objet manufacturé, c'est à l'artiste de lui attribuer le statut d'œuvre d'art.
Plus l'art s'approche ainsi du quotidien, plus les artistes se tournent vers des matériaux pauvres, des objets qu'ils recyclent. Après la seconde guerre mondiale, les artistes sculpteurs peuvent voir les choses en grand. Grâce à l'industrialisation notamment, ils peuvent concevoir des sculptures de plus en plus monumentales qui résistent aux intempéries et peuvent donc être installées en extérieur.
Dans la sculpture contemporaine abstraite, l'environnement est donc plus facilement pris en compte par les artistes. Dans le land art par exemple, Christo et Jeanne Claude créent des sculptures contemporaines abstraites qui s'intègrent directement au paysage, les installations de Richard Serra elles, sont si monumentales qu'elle permettent aux visiteurs de déambuler à l'intérieur, dans le minimalisme, la sculpture et la matière est déterminée par son environnement car elle souligne justement le vide et l'espace autour d'elle. Parmi les grands sculpteurs abstraits contemporains, on peut notamment citer Henry Moore, Niki de Saint Phalle, Barbara Hepworth ou encore Louise Bourgeois. La sculpture abstraite désigne un type de sculpture qui ne dépeint pas fidèlement le monde réel, mais qui explore l'imaginaire grâce aux formes, aux couleurs et d'autres éléments visuels.
Les œuvres sculpturales de Barbara Hepworth sont un exemple célèbre de sculpture abstraite. Elles comprennent des œuvres telles que Two Forms (Divided Circle) et Mother and Child. Les sculptures de Hepworth sont abstraites dans leur forme tout en faisant souvent référence au monde naturel et aux relations entre les formes naturelles.
La sculpture abstraite au sens où nous l'entendons aujourd'hui trouve ses racines au 20ème siècle, lorsque les artistes européens ont commencé à créer de l'art abstrait. Ce mouvement a suivi le déclin de la popularité du réalisme dans le monde de l'art, les artistes cherchant d'autres moyens de représenter le monde qui les entoure. On attribue au mouvement cubiste la production des premières sculptures abstraites, qui expérimentent des formes géométriques et abstraites.
