En la década de 1830, Nièpce descubre el proceso para fijar imágenes en láminas de estaño. En 1833, Louis Daguerre y François Arago continúan sus investigaciones tras su muerte e inventan el daguerrotipo que imprime una imagen en una lámina de plata expuesta a la luz. Nace la fotografía.
El retrato en blanco y negro se convertirá en el pilar de la industria fotográfica del Segundo Imperio y casi hace que la pintura de retratos se vuelva anticuada. Se comercializan lentes con una distancia focal más corta y que permiten tiempos de exposición reducidos. Sin embargo, el equipo necesario sigue siendo costoso y difícil de dominar. Algunos fotógrafos deciden entonces abrir su taller de fotografía, los llamaremos daguerrotipistas. El daguerrotipo es caprichoso y los fotógrafos profesionales deben tomar la imagen con mucho cuidado para hacer su enfoque. Reciben a mucha gente en su estudio fotográfico y ofrecen prácticamente un catálogo de poses, especialmente para los retratos de niños, muy populares entre las familias adineradas. Primero frecuentados por la burguesía, la caída de los precios tras la multiplicación de talleres atrae a una clientela mayor. Este fenómeno también tiene el don de exasperar al poeta maldito Charles Baudelaire, molesto por el narcisismo provocado por los daguerrotipistas.
A pesar de sus protestas, la tendencia al egoísmo no hará más que aumentar con la aparición de los “retratos tarjetas de visita". En 1858, Adolphe Eugène Disdéri propone producir retratos a modo de tarjeta de visita, como hoy en día pueden existir las fotos de identidad: hay entonces una única tirada en la que aparecen ocho retratos, donde el modelo se mete en situación (un poco como una película de fotomatón). Muy apreciados por la burguesía, destacan la situación social de los modelos y deben dar cuenta de su condición. Los retratos tarjeta de visita de famosos incluso se venden a los clientes que luego pueden integrarlos en sus fotos familiares. El fotógrafo Nadar será uno de los primeros en mostrar un verdadero enfoque artístico en la realización de sus retratos. Enfatizará las expresiones y la comodidad del modelo tomándose el tiempo para tranquilizarlo antes de hacerle el retrato. Fotografía así a los intelectuales y a los artistas de la época, como Honoré de Balzac, George Sand, Victor Hugo, incluso logra inmortalizar a Baudelaire y reconciliarlo así con el retrato en estudio.
A finales del siglo XIX, la práctica de la fotografía se democratiza con la llegada de la empresa Kodak. El uso de la cámara es más cotidiano y el arte del retrato también. Un siglo después es la invención de la cámara digital la que trastorna los códigos. Mientras que antes las modificaciones para alterar las fotografías solo se podían hacer en el momento de la captura, del encuadre o al revelar los clichés, con lo digital, el retoque se vuelve más accesible, más fácil y rápido. La fotografía digital permite más desviaciones y la cantidad de posibilidades para tomar fotografías se dispara.
Entre los fotógrafos retratistas que marcan este último siglo, podemos citar a Cindy Sherman, que destaca en autorretratos, Annie Leibovitz que inmortaliza las celebridades en poses dramáticas en analógico, el loco dúo Pierre y Gilles o incluso Diane Arbus, Irving Penn que ha sabido captar la sensibilidad de cada uno de sus sujetos, Richard Avedon que sublima las estrellas de los años 60, a href="https://www.artsper.com/cy/artistes-contemporains/allemagne/1732/helmut-newton">b>Helmut Newton/b>/a> y sus controvertidas sesiones de fotos, Bettina Rheims, famosa por todas sus bonitas fotos de retratos de mujeres.
