Blequin

France • 1988

BLEQUIN, a multi-talented artist, uses drawing as a means of free and therapeutic expression, oscillating between sharp social criticism and sensitive personal quest.

Biography

Illustrator, screenwriter, caricaturist, philosopher, historian, journalist, lecturer, essayist, diarist, poet, presenter, humorist, photographer, videographer… Born in Brest, BLEQUIN has enough strings to his bow to make a harp. Heavily influenced by Cabu, Reiser and Siné, he uses humorous drawing as a weapon to denounce what he finds intolerable in today's world. But his work is not limited to swipes at an absurd society: one of his friends compared him to a butterfly and, in fact, he flits from one graphic practice to another, moving happily from India ink to colored pencils, gouache, collage, watercolor or grease pencil, according to his desires, the pleasure of creating taking precedence over the desire to convey a possible message. Because drawing is not only a weapon, at least not in the offensive sense of the term: for Blequin, an autistic Asperger traumatized by six years of bullying at school, it is also an excellent way to overcome his social discomfort and reach out to others without resorting to more "ordinary" vectors that he will never completely master.
