Magischer Realismus
Der Begriff des magischen Realismus wurde 1925 von dem deutschen Fotografen, Kunsthistoriker und Kunstkritiker Franz Roh erfunden, als er moderne realistische Gemälde beschreiben wollte, die phantastische oder traumähnliche Themen zum Gegenstand haben. Der Begriff stammt aus Rohs Buch Nach Expressionismus: Magischer Realismus, was übersetzt so viel heißt wie "Nach dem Expressionismus: Magischer Realismus".
In der europäischen Kultur des 20. Jahrhunderts war der Magische Realismus Teil einer reaktionären Bewegung gegen die moderne oder avantgardistische Kunst, die als Rückkehr zur Ordnung bekannt ist. Diese Bewegung in der Kunst basierte weitgehend auf einer Philosophie, die aus dem Erbe des Ersten Weltkriegs resultierte. Zu den Künstlern des Magischen Realismus gehören Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Savinio und andere in Italien sowie Alexander Kanoldt und Adolf Ziegler im benachbarten Deutschland. Der magische Realismus ist eng verwandt mit den traumhaften Darstellungen des Surrealismus und der Neoromantik in Frankreich. Der Begriff wird auch verwendet, um das Werk bestimmter Maler von der anderen Seite des großen Teichs in Amerika in den 1940er und 1950er Jahren zu beschreiben, darunter Paul Cadmus, Philip Evergood und Ivan Albright. Der Begriff wurde auch zur Beschreibung literarischer Praktiken verwendet, z. B. für die Werke von Jorge Luis Borges und Gabriel García Márquez.
