Kyoto-Cali is an adventure above all. An unexpected and touching encounter between a young Colombian artist from Cali and Japanese traditions.

After several solo and group shows in Latin America, The United States and Europe, the artist Armando Mesías has agreed to be part of the experience and challenge of L-Expériment. The artistic objective was to successfully adapt his contemporary style with urban influences onto Japanese handcrafted objects. New materials, techniques, and creative processes were brought into the mix and were confronted. The encounter between East and West gave birth to colorful, dynamic and innovative pieces.

The scope of this exhibition is to bring a new perspective on Japanese craftsmanship. Trapped in the shackles of tradition and lack of modernization, it now faces gradual disappearance. We hope that this artistic experience will help revive and renew a type of art that is too often forgotten and will bring recognition to these craftsmen working from the shadows.

Masahiro Inoue comes from a long line of craftsmen from Kyoto. His art consists in appending strips of Japanese paper with calligraphy or landscape art painted on them on silk fabric. The resulting final object is called Kakejiku or Kakemono (more generically). These works are exhibited in the form of a triptych, a device chosen to show the work of these artists. Armando Mesías represented three generations of Japanese artisans who participated in the design of the support by mixing them with Colombian wildlife.

In addition to this, a series of handcrafted Hand Fans is presented, reinventing traditional floral designs while overlapping the natural contexts of Colombia and Japan. Another notable piece is the large Byobu Screen dating from approximately a century, with a colourful intervention of some of Colombia’s own endangered fauna. And finally, a series of personal monumental paintings of the young artist depicting ethnics from his own surroundings and tradition, with dashes of Japanese ancient graphic.
