Presentation
In recent months, several museum exhibitions in France devoted to Andy Warhol have used the photographs of Hervé Gloaguen to shed light on his bubbling life and his multiple personality: the Center Pompidou Metz, the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Philharmonie de Paris. . Not to mention exhibitions abroad, and publications on Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground. It was therefore time to show the experience of “New York in the time of Andy Warhol” that Hervé Gloaguen captured in the 1960s, through photos remarkable not only for their historical and documentary character, but also for their quality. of their construction, their particularly lively atmosphere, whether in black and white or in color (the possibilities of which he appreciated very early on). In 1965, thanks to Gilles Ehrmann, collaborator of “Réalités”, the young photographer obtained reports in the United States. New York is love at first sight! He discovered the artistic avant-garde through the Off Off Broadway café-theaters, the choreographer Merce Cunningham, the masters of free jazz and of course Andy Warhol. From 1965 to 1971, he stayed there regularly, notably on the Lower East Side, frequented by bohemians and creators, with happenings, Salsa concerts in the street, demonstrations against the Vietnam War. From the energy felt from these stays, Hervé Gloaguen offers us a set of recent prints and a few vintages, a strong testimony to an effervescent New York.
