Presentation

Born in 1954, near Lyon, Paul Bergignat lives in the Cévennes (France).

After the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et Métiers d’Art in Paris, his life professional turned to architecture, in Lyon then in Montpellier; at the same time he continue his experiences, in particular on the transparency of inks on paper.

He left the architecture in 2006 to devote himself in the painting and his first exhibitions followed. He often recalls two formative encounters: the light like in Turner’s works, and later, he discovers the fabulous transparencies of Zao Wou-Ki.

Paul Bergignat paints silent, unreal landscapes, traversed by evanescent mists. Time suspended, immensity of the heavens, a light, coming from a horizon barely raised, and a line of trees.
He realizes an inner work, which draws on his unconscious.

« The painter mustn’t only paint what he sees before what he sees himself » Caspar David Friedrich. For his later paintings, blacks always deeper also, a work of matter painting emphasized the relentless composition of these large formats. In this black series, often, unreality slides towards abstraction.
