Galería Rafael Ortiz presents this exhibition for the 60th anniversary of the formation of the iconic group Equipo 57. With this project we also want to pay tribute to Pepe Duarte, one of its five members, who passed away recently.
Why such title? We believe that both Equipo 57’s ideals and their most theoretical work are based on two premises that are paramount: their artistic approach, which is completely different to what existed before them, and their radical idealism, which became a revolutionary formula by which they renounced to the individual authorship of their pieces.
Equipo 57 is a milestone in the History of artistic modernity in Spain. 60 years after the group’s formation, their work still surprises us for their complexity and for the amplitude of their field of activity. Equipo 57’s work originates from a search for the essence of space, a desire to push the physical and emotional limits of the pieces.
The period of activity of this group of artists (1957-1962), who became pioneers both in theoretical inquiry as well as in other aspects of artistic creation, left us pieces that are just as beautiful as complex creations. This exhibition is different from previous ones of Equipo 57: it is monochromatic. In words of Juan Cuenca, “it looks almost like an exhibition of Zurbarán”. The drawings and sculptures, some of which are being displayed for the first time, create a silent and rigorous atmosphere, a space for meditation.
