Presentation
On the occasion of the opening of the Thierry Bigaignon Gallery, Ralph Gibson will present a new series, “Vertical Horizon”, far from his famous black and white photographs. Seventeen years after the retrospective devoted to him by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie and five years after his last exhibition in Paris, Ralph Gibson is back with a selection of twelve completely unpublished color photographs. Known above all for his contrasting black and white shots, the famous American photographer has explored the field of color since the arrival of digital technology. At 77, Ralph Gibson does not give up what makes his identity as a photographer. The new technology intuitively extends its approach between abstraction and figuration. More than ever, Ralph Gibson cuts the space of his photo with a line and works on oppositions. From this border between lines and volumes, a strong tension is born, within the frame itself, reinforced by the “portrait” format. And Thierry Bigaignon added "the images of Ralph Gibson that we are going to present are real visual oxymorons and it is moreover from this concept that the title of the Vertical Horizon exhibition was born". Gilles Mora, historian and art critic and specialist in American photography, had the opportunity to see a preview of Ralph Gibson's series and is full of praise for this artist with a singular vision: “Ralph Gibson is without a doubt the most European of American photographers and a perfect connoisseur of our culture. His mastery in the almost graphic, even abstract, composition of the image, has never put him aside from a sensuality that is like the hallmark of his photographs. It's time to rediscover Ralph Gibson ”. This inaugural exhibition is also highly symbolic in nature since it will take place 41 years to the day after the Galerie Agathe Gaillard itself exhibited the work of Ralph Gibson for its very first exhibition, on June 10, 1975. Agathe Gaillard will be moreover, the godmother of this exhibition, a major event for collectors, amateurs and enthusiasts of photography. 12 large format photographs (80x120cm). Limited edition of 8 copies, printed and signed by the artist. Gallery open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and by appointment.
