The social life of things

Genève From March 15, 2018 to May 5, 2018

Presentation
Through a dialogue established between the artists Julien Spiewak and Vasilis Zografos, the exhibition The life of objects proposes to show how the artist approaches the meaning and the value of the object, and how the artist transcends a subjective opinion to approach a collective perspective through the exchange of values. What happens when the artist becomes the collector and therefore the subject desiring the gratification? How does the artist select the objects, often neglecting their materiality, their historical context, their fabrication, their practical use and the existing copies? For artists, the object, as sender and receiver, serves as a vehicle for ideas that are introduced into the work of art as ready-mades (an English term that was first used by Marcel Duchamp, in January 1916) - a process which redefines its use value according to aesthetic criteria. While values are set by cultural knowledge, objects whose prices exceed our desires to own them thus create a distance between the person who desires them and the effort required to acquire them, between pure desire and immediate gratification. In this void, meanings and interpretations are established. These are not only linked to the objects themselves, to their provenance and their symbolisms, but mainly to the Subject, to its social conditions, its emotional weight and its needs, which create the need to transform the values carried by the subject. 'object. Spiewak's works were produced at the Ariana Museum, which will also be showing his work during the duration of the exhibition at espace_L, and Zografos' works were inspired by the objects on display at the Ariana Museum. In its original configuration, the Ariana museum, created by Gustave Revilliod (1817-1890), a great collector and patron, housed in addition to ceramics, glass and stained glass, collections of painting, sculpture, old books, coins , silverware, furniture and many other curiosities. Through the photographs of Spiewak and the paintings of Zografos, we invite you to rediscover the objects exhibited at the Ariana Museum in a new context. Vernissage: Thursday March 15, 2018 from 6 p.m. Exhibition: until May 5, 2018 Opening hours: Tuesday - Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment
