To travel is to free yourself from your ties, to escape. “The journey is a return to basics,” says the Tibetan proverb. The artist Mathilde de Bellecombe could have made this motto her own. His new exhibition at the Atelier Piece Unique takes the visitor along crossroads, near and far elsewhere, refined universes. “My paintings are imbued with dreams and travel. In my last paintings, we find a lot the presence of water and the boat. I like this symbol, its ambiguity. The boat is an element that carries you, takes you far, which anchors at your destination. It reassures the traveler. But he can also feel insecure there. A boat is so fragile, so unstable in the vastness of the oceans. This new series that the artist presents exclusively at the gallery resonates with his personal life. For three years, Mathilde de Bellecombe has lived abroad. First, in Iran, and now in Morocco, in Casablanca. “These stays have changed my painting. I am going towards more spontaneity. In Iran, access to outdoor spaces is complicated for women. In my studio, inside the house, I experienced in reaction a great feeling of freedom which was expressed in my painting. The gesture has become wider, the touch more assertive. "
