EL Meya, whose real name is Maya Ouarda Benchikh El Fegoun is an Algerian contemporary artist born in Constantine in 1988. Graduated from the Algiers Fine Arts School.
EL Meya's work focuses on the critical look she has on her society. Through her subjects, EL Meya could propose a demonstrative, didactic, heavy work but she always chose both a frontal and generous way to make paintings that are at the same time captivating and polysemous.
EL Meya's work has been presented in several exhibitions and events in Algeria and abroad, including La Résidence Méditerranée at La Friche Belle de Mai in Marseille, France in 2018, Youmein Festival of Tangier, Morocco in 2017 and the 11th Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Dakar, Off DAK'ART, Senegal in 2014. EL Meya's work will be also presented at the largest survey exhibition on Algerian contemporary art at Wallach Art Gallery in New York, USA.
EL Meya is also launching her first monograph book which includes different critical essays from Algerian and international authors.
