Gloria Petyarre

Australia Born in: 1942
Gloria Petyarre was born in 1942. She is one of the famous Petyarre sisters. But above all she is a major aboriginal artist. She began her artistic career in the late 70s by producing, like other artists of her community, batiks. Her creations have been influenced by this particular work. She often paints by thematic series, always strong in tradition but with a very personal approach. Gloria's works often have a very abstract aspect.

Some of her work have no point, they are just blocks of color and more recently small hatchings. It is a "patron" that directs the rituals. Between tradition and modernity her work is unclassifiable. The sacred site of Aknangkere (The Dream of the Mountain Devil Lizard, linked to her as well as the "Bush Medicine Leaves" describing a blanket of leaves of a particular variety with powerful medicinal properties) remains the main subject of her paintings, by constantly renewing the traditional visual representations, Gloria has become one of the most famous women artist of the general public. Her knowledge is vast and her wisdom as much as her charisma is reflected in her paintings.

LVMH in indigenous Art !!! It is in fact in 2009 that the prestigious "maison Hermes" chose Gloria Petyarre's pattern to illustrate a scarf representing her "Leaves" (carré Hermes signed by Gloria)
