Biography
Translation in progress

Martha Grünenwaldt, born in 1910 in Hamme-Mille in the commune of Beauvechain, in Walloon Brabant, and died in Mouscron on March 23, 2008, is a creator of art brut. His father is a traveling musician and teaches him the violin. He plays in the balls and festivals of neighboring villages. Martha accompanies her throughout her childhood and follows elementary school teaching only irregularly. At the age of twenty-three, she marries a musician. During this period, she works in the factory until the birth of her daughter, Josine. The year 1937 is that of separation from her husband. From then on, Martha leads a life of wandering, accompanied by her little girl: she plays the violin on the terraces of the cafes. At the end of 1940, her husband took custody of her daughter. She is then engaged as a servant in a castle (where she is not allowed to play the violin). In 1968, his daughter offered to move to her home in Mouscron1. In 1981, at age seventy-one, she began to draw, on the back of posters and recovered wallpapers. She uses gouache, colored pencils and ballpoint pen. She draws exclusively women... who are flowers... who are animals... who are birds... who sign a life full of vertigo. Martha is away from the world, busy with her business... a business that may finally bring her some peace.
