Jean Doulliez was born in 1943 in Belgium and still lives there today.
His higher education led him towards a career in architecture but he simultaneously has been painting since the 70's
He's interested by those themes which are very closely related to his initial job. He works on the notion of space, shape and image. Nonetheless, he goes into the depth under the yoke of painting. How to represent time that flies by? How to speak about the human concerns or nature's intriguing forces through technique?
One can notice silhouettes in his paintings, between figuration and abstraction, one can perceive faces but devoid of any significant features. It's through their colored clothes that these human sketches stand up straight. We are confronted with a reality which is partly erased, guessed and where the surfaces are adjustable. The architect's writing can be felt through his clean strokes, which support the entire composition.
The series presented here by Jean Doulliez accentuates on the universe of musicians. Music which is the symbol of freedom, lightness and highlights men who give rise to the art of dancing between canvases. Rock & roll to blues, instruments and attitudes adapt to cover the spectrum of various genres. Colors alternate like music scores, which echo in the painting and are summed up at the bottom right of the image.
He tries out several techniques like charcoal, ink, pastel, oil and acrylic.
Jean Doulliez has been awarded several times. The first one was in 1981, he won the first prize during the 10th Fair of Cercle Royal des Amis de l’Art in Louvière. The same year, he obtained the first jury prize during the artistes de Chaudfontaine competition. Then recently, in 2014 he won the first prize during the « Salon Concours national de peinture DUMA » exhibition.
