Born in: 1956

Jean Claude Wouters is a Belgian artist born in 1956 in Brussels. a multidisciplinary artist, he specialized in dance, painting and cinema. He studied art at the ERG in Brussels, cinema at the INSAS of Brussels, performing arts at the MUDRA School in Brussels. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles after living for some time in Paris, Italy, Dubai, Brussels and Tokyo.

In his artistic career, Jean Claude Wouters has always shown a great sensibility for the nature of the body and mind. After training in and practicing dance with Maurice Béjart and Lindsay Kemp by the end of the 70s, he started working as a performer and independent film creator. His work was selected by the British Film Institute and at the Cannes Film Festival in 1981. He has received several awards in international film festivals such as the Golden Gate Award at the International Film Festival of San Francisco in 1992. In Paris, he did advertising films for Chanel, Lancome and Yves Saint Laurent.

Painting is an integral part of his artistic Journey. From an early age, he was immersed in the painting of Flemish primitives, which impressed him and determined his approach to art and to spirituality. He was also attracted by Japan and the practice of Zen since the age of 15. His artistic approach, really nourished by this double culture, oscillates between photography, painting and drawing. An iconoclast artist, he questions through his artwork the status of the image and its relation to the visible.
